The chapel was built in honor for all seafarers from Privlaka who are away from home. | ![]() Privlaka WellsThe wells were the source of water and life. They witnessed the hard peasant and fisherman’s work, they listened stories and kept lovers’ secrets. Twelve wells have remained until today. The most famous one is the “Sokolar” next to the Saint Vitus Church. | ![]() Sokolar WellThe most famous well is called “Sokolar” which is a place of a sad love story of a young man. Mother’s kind words promising him that he’ll find the most beautiful and most noble lady could not give him consolation. The young man, struck with grief and pain, turned into water in his mother’s lap. That water and well is named after him (Sokolar). This legend is mentioned in first Croatian novel (Petar Zoranić, “Mountains”). |

They were widely known by sea sand extraction which was carried on shoulders to the boats typical for this region. | ![]() FishingTo experience Privlaka is to go early in the morning to the vivid marina in the village center. The local fishermen look through the nets in completely traditional, ancient way after morning fishing offering us fresh fish. The local population of Privlaka is known for "ludar", fishing tradition which is carried from father to son for decades. |
History and cultural heritage
Privlaka is first mentioned in written sources in 1296 AD as a vineyard village. For centuries, it is strongly oriented to sea, fishing and seafare. Its name has changed throughout history: Brevilaqua, Privilacha, Priulacha… into a name that we know today.
